IBS stands for Irritable bowel syndrome, and it is a long-term (chronic) condition of the gut (bowel) that causes episodes of tummy (abdominal) cramps, bloating and either constipation or diarrhoea. Its cause is not known, but it seems that the symptoms are due to an increased sensitivity of the bowel. There is no visible abnormality in the bowel and no diagnostic test for IBS – but it is certainly not ‘all in the mind’. In the appropriate context, and having performed baseline investigations to exclude structural or inflammatory disease, the diagnosis is made on clinical grounds.
We have created a free information booklet that you can download by clicking on the link below, to give you some more information on what Irritable Bowel Syndrome is, and how you can manage it.
